International Peace and Security Initiative

Julie is the creator and Director of the International Peace and Security Initiative at the University of Cincinnati College of Law.

The International Peace and Security Initiative is an exciting new multidisciplinary center that provides thought leadership, engages community, offers real-world learning for students, and prepares the next generation of leaders working for a more secure and peaceful world.

The Initiative is committed to supporting sustainable peace and security by addressing the root causes of conflict and advancing solutions based on the rule of law, human rights, justice, and shared humanity.

JULIE’S INSPIRATION

Julie’s work is influenced by the legacy of her father, Howard M. Leftwich. He was a kind, generous, and caring person who was loved by everyone who knew him.  He wanted to see good in the world and had a deep sense of compassion and social justice, which he passed on to Julie. A lifelong faculty member at the University of Cincinnati, he was an inspiration and a bright light that shone in the lives of all who knew him.

As a final act before the death of Julie’s mother, Sandra Leftwich, in November 2024, Howard’s family established the Howard M. Leftwich Memorial Fund to support the International Peace and Security Initiative and to honor the legacy that he left behind.
